Drains can get quite stinky but they get even worse with the smell of sewage. Most drains get stinky because of crud inside the pipe and sewer gas. Fortunately, a smelly drain problem is easy to solve.
To know which drain is the stinker, consider this trick: cover the suspected smelly drain opening using a tape or a plastic bag. Let the room air out for just a bit and give it a smell test – if the smell is gone you’ve found the right drain.
A clogged drain can smell enough to carry into a room and there are a few good clues that this is the source of the problem – a slow drain is one indication. A partially clogged drain doesn’t get rid of waste effective leading to more crud buildup – this may eventually lead to a total clog but it can take a long time. The solution is to clean the drain thoroughly.
