Homeowners know that having a house is a lifetime commitment. When something is damaged, you have to get it repaired; when a bill is due, you have to settle it; when the grass needs trimming, you have to take out the lawn mower. Numerous things come up that need the homeowner’s time and money.
However, when the inhabitants of the home get older and ultimately transition to their senior years, the needs of the house become more difficult to address. Maintenance now becomes a burden because of financial and physical limitations as a result of the absence of a steady income and the limited mobility of an aging physique.
Fortunately, there are individuals who are concerned of the needs of elderly homeowners and have set out to assist them. A great example of a group with the best interests of these aging homeowners at heart are the volunteers of the Home Repair program at Senior Adult Services (SAS).
According to Star Local News, the program is, “designed to help our friends and neighbors remain safe in their homes when mobility issues arise.” Volunteers install ramps, grab bars and smoke alarms to facilitate the safety of seniors in their homes. They also do chores like cut back overgrown trees and haul away debris, do minor repair projects or repaint exteriors.
